Reflections on the shows from Jonathan David.
With our visits to Vision Expo in New York, 100% Optical in London and MIDO in Milan, all of us at Affinity Optical saw pockets of optimism in a very tough market.
Visitor and exhibitor numbers were definitely down, with continued COVID restrictions in some countries and global economic uncertainty keeping many attendees away.
More specifically, we have inflation at rates last seen more than 40 years ago, as well as disrupted and increasingly expensive supply chains.
Overall we couldn’t help noticing two reoccurring themes from the shows: increased marketing of sustainable product and accelerating clinical technology.
However, as highlighted in last weeks UK Optician magazine, sustainability is looking like an increasingly crowded space at the moment so it’s important buyers do proper due diligence (Optican – Editors comment 20 May 22).
Likewise with technology, with a range of new technologies entering the market, it highlights once again the old adage of ‘buyer beware’.
